About District
The name “Dhamtari” is derived from the combination of the words “Dhamm” and “Tarai,” and the district is situated in the fertile plains of the Chhattisgarh region. Dhamtari district was officially carved out of the Raipur district—the capital region of Chhattisgarh—on July 6, 1998, alongside Mahasamund district. Currently, Dhamtari shares its borders with Raipur and Durg districts to the North; Gariaband district to the East; Balod district to the West; North Bastar Kanker and Kondagaon districts to the South/Southwest; and the state of Odisha to the south. The district covers a total area of 2,029 square kilometers and has an average elevation of 305 meters above sea level. It is bounded by Raipur and Kanker districts to the north; Bastar to the south; parts of Odisha state to the east; and Durg and Kanker districts to the west. The Mahanadi is the principal river of the district; it is also known by names such as Kankan-nadi, Chitrotpala, Nilotpala, Mandvahini, and Jairath. Originating from the Sihawa mountain range in Dhamtari district, the Mahanadi—a major river of Central India—flows eastward towards Odisha and eventually empties into the Bay of Bengal. Dhamtari district falls under two parliamentary constituencies (Kanker and Mahasamund) and three assembly constituencies (Dhamtari, Kurud, and Sihawa).
